Day 271 - Mam Tor - Peak District
03 08 2012

A bit of a gamble - with rain forecast as well as strong is wind, we headed for Rushup Edge with the forecast -SSW. We arrived to see four gliders fly a top to bottom with absolutely no wind, they didn't all make the landing field - gutted.

We waited a while deciding what to do for the best, and spoke to one of the guys who just landed - he said a weather front had just passed through with rain - not it was still. Now, I'm no weather expert, but I do know that after a front has passed, it normally goes dead for a while - then the regular wind pick back up, so we waited a while longer then drove up Mam Tor and walked up the South Face to find the wind was on the hill and blowing some 10-13mph - quite light, but better than it had been since we arrived.

We got our gliders set up and launched, I took a sharp left straight after take off to get close to the hill to maximise lift and managed to stay up, nothing special but around 100ft ATO for 45 mins - result!

I played in the smooth air, felt some drops of rain that passed without me getting wet, then some guy started taking my photo's so below are some ground to air photos of my messing around in front of the hill.

We landed and packed up for 9:00pm... nothing great, but not a wasted journey.

Thanks to Vladimir Retyunin for lwtting me have the photo's he took.
