Day 484 - Rushup Edge - Peak District | ||

After much deliberation and weather checking I ended up driving to Rushup
Edge in the Peak District today where hopefully a good few hours soaring could
be had. I arrived to gliders flying sop set off up the hill to take off carrying
my glider. The wind was not quite as forecast however it was obvious that it was flyable by the number of gliders in the sky, after 20 minutes or so I set up and launched quickly gaining enough height to cross to the main part of the ridge. As I flew iI became aware that the air was not as smooth as it appeared, it was weird, a bit bumpy, small thermals, unusual lift, also above I was aware of cloud development, a little more than I was happy with so I decided to land (this is all within 15 minutes). En-route to landing I encountered quite strong lift, quite low to the ground, making my nervousness of the cloud even stronger. I ended up making a few spirals and bar afterwards to get down , even getting into the landing field was difficult, but I landed ok and packed up. The air was warm and very humid, there was a small chance of rain, the clouds were going dark, I was glad to be down. I decided not to waste the drive so did the Mam Tor to Lose Hill Pike walk of some 8Km with 400M climbing, took 1.5 hours and when I returned they were still flying but I was still not happy with it, so left. On the way home I got work that Long Mynd was working and as the weather was due to go bad for a few days I decided to risk it, arriving late and taking off in really low wind I managed over half an hours soaring watching the sun set, not brilliant, but a nice relaxing flight.
